Is This The End Of The Adrian Peterson Fantasy Era?

Fantasy football owners around the world felt plenty of pain when Adrian Peterson was held to just a single point in his Week 14 game. A mid-foot sprain prevented him from posting his usual numbers, and he is questionable for Week 15 (and the rest of the regular season). Looking forward, is this the end of Peterson as the top fantasy football running back in the game?

Heading into 2014, Peterson will be 29 years old, which is old for running back standards. He is also an “older” 29, as he has had quite a bit of wear and tear. Minnesota has failed to surround him with a talented quarterback, so teams are able to stack their defenses against him to stop the run.

According to ESPN’s fantasy rankings, Peterson is right now the fifth best running back. However, all a person has to do is look at the guys ahead of him to see that the end of his dominance might be near. Jamaal Charles (25), LeSean McCoy (25) and  Knowshon Moreno (26) are all younger than him, and Matt Forte (28) is about the same age. Youngsters like Eddie Lacy, Alfred Morris, Giovani Bernard and other are also hot on his tail coming up through the ranks.

Peterson had a season to remember in 2012, and there is a very good chance he will be enshrined in Canton when it is all said and done. People who play fantasy football have reason for concern heading into next season though. He might be able to piece together one more top 5 season, but Minnesota more than anything needs to find a quarterback that can at least take a little pressure off of him. Otherwise, Peterson will continue to take a beating, and eventually his fantasy football numbers will take a dive.
